Learning with AI

How to verify what you have actually understood when AI helps you learn?

1250 € per session, excl. VAT

In short

Learn to check what you have really understood when an AI assistant helps you learn or prepare a topic. This human skill, metacognition, counters the illusion of understanding created by fluent explanations, using self-explanation, recall without the assistant and honest confidence calibration in a personal learning log.

Why this training?

Artificial intelligence is a powerful accelerator for acquiring new knowledge, offering quick and well-structured answers. However, this fluency can create an 'illusion of understanding,' where employees believe they have mastered a topic when they have only skimmed it. Without a method to verify the actual grounding of knowledge, the investment in AI-assisted training risks being superficial. This course focuses on metacognition—the human skill of reflecting on one's own learning process—to ensure that help from AI translates into authentic, lasting mastery. Participants engage in hands-on exercises designed to decouple learning from AI assistance. They will take an AI-provided explanation of a new concept and then attempt to explain it in their own words, without support. They will also create flashcards and questions to self-test later, a key technique for verifying that the information has successfully moved from the screen to long-term memory. Deliverables: A structured personal learning log to track progress.; A personal decision-making grid for AI interaction.; An action plan to integrate metacognitive practices into one's learning routine.. This course does not cover the technical aspects of AI or prompt engineering. It focuses exclusively on developing the human skill of metacognition. The performance of the AI assistants used during the exercises is not the subject of this training. The workshop is delivered in person as a private session for up to 12 participants, in one language chosen from French, Dutch and English. All exercise data is fictional or anonymised, and every result produced with AI is reviewed and validated by a responsible person. The aim is a bounded result the team can reuse, not a promise of deployment.

Objectives of this training

  • Identify the illusion of understanding generated by fluent AI explanations.
  • Apply the self-explanation technique to transform information into personal knowledge.
  • Practice active information retrieval without AI assistance to strengthen memory.
  • Calibrate one's confidence level against one's actual understanding of a topic.
  • Establish a decision framework for choosing between thinking for oneself and querying the AI.

Who is it for and what are the prerequisites?

Roles and tasks concerned

  • Professionals using AI for skill development and continuous learning.
  • Managers wanting their teams to derive lasting benefit from AI-assisted learning.
  • Learning and Development (L&D) specialists integrating AI into their pedagogical pathways.

Prior skills

  • Participants must have completed the AI Fundamentals and AI Prompting courses or have equivalent experience. The skill taught is human and is practiced without any specific tool. For AI-assisted exercises, participants will use an AI assistant authorized by their organization, with a paid plan including the necessary features, whose availability may depend on the administrator, and user accounts with appropriate rights. The case studies will be fictional or anonymized.

What you will work on

  1. The Illusion of Fluency: Why AI Can Deceive Our Brains

Defining the illusion of understanding and its cognitive causes. Analyzing examples of fluent but shallow AI responses.

  2. From Passive Reading to Active Engagement: Self-Explanation

Mastering the self-explanation technique to rephrase and internalize knowledge. Differentiating between explaining to oneself and simple paraphrasing.

  3. Testing to Retain: Retrieval Practice

Understanding the principle of retrieval practice to consolidate memory. Creating test questions from AI-generated content.

  4. Knowing What You Know: Calibrating Confidence and Making Decisions

Measuring the gap between perceived confidence and actual competence. Developing criteria to decide when to ask the AI or persevere alone.

What you take away

  • A structured personal learning log to track progress.
  • A personal decision-making grid for AI interaction.
  • An action plan to integrate metacognitive practices into one's learning routine.

Method and assessment

  • Interactive workshops based on practical cases and guided reflection.
  • Individual exercises simulating situations with and without an AI assistant.
  • Group discussions to share strategies and challenges encountered.

Evaluation is formative and continuous, based on active participation, the quality of self-explanations produced during exercises, and the relevance of the developed personal learning log.
