Verifiable regulatory summary
How can you obtain a readable summary without losing the conditions, exceptions and references in the source text?

In short
This half-day session of 3 hours introduces the use of generative AI to prepare a regulatory summary. Working with a fictitious case file, participants identify essential information, draft a clearly bounded request and check every assertion. They leave with an operational briefing note to submit to a qualified professional.
Why this training?
A fluent summary can conceal an exception, turn a possibility into an obligation or omit a condition of application. The challenge is to shorten the text without changing its scope or effect, while retaining references that allow the reader to return to the exact passage. AI can suggest an initial wording, but it replaces neither reading the document nor legal analysis. The training distinguishes extraction, rewording and interpretation, then makes omissions, uncertainties and elements requiring human validation visible. Case study used throughout: The fictitious company « Névoria Archivage » is preparing a meeting on its document management practices. Its administrative manager requests a one-page note based on a fictitious regulation created for training purposes, covering a scope of application, obligations, exceptions and references to a deliberately missing annex. Application at work: Reuse the template with a public text relevant to your organisation, check its version against an official source and have the summary reviewed by a qualified professional before circulation. Any conclusion about applicability must be checked with your legal department.
Objectives of this training
- Identify the scope, intended audience and references of a text.
- Distinguish between obligations, conditions, exceptions and missing information.
- Draft an instruction that restricts the AI to the document provided.
- Produce a short summary with references to the source passages.
- Check discrepancies between the summary and the original text.
Who is it for and what are the prerequisites?
Roles and tasks concerned
- Administrative assistants and managers preparing briefing notes on regulatory texts.
- Compliance or support staff who need to communicate a text to readers without a legal background.
Prior skills
- No prior knowledge of AI required.
- Ability to read an administrative document in French and identify its intended recipient.
What you will work on
Read before asking AI
Objective: Define what the case file actually allows you to summarise. Document structure, fictitious status, version, scope, definitions and cross-references; distinction between the supplied text and assumed context.
Set boundaries for the first draft
Objective: Formulate a request that is accessible to a beginner. Purpose of the instruction, expected length, target reader, mandatory references and prohibition on filling gaps with assumptions.
Check fidelity sentence by sentence
Objective: Detect changes in meaning. Difference between « may » and « must », negations, cumulative conditions, exceptions and fabricated references; limitations of AI self-evaluation.
Prepare a responsible handover
Objective: Make the note usable without giving it the status of legal advice. One-page presentation, separation of established content from open questions, source attribution and validation process.
What you take away
- Worksheet identifying the text’s key features and limitations.
- Reusable summarisation instruction with safeguards.
- One-page note with references and points to verify.
- Comparison checklist before and after correction.
Method and assessment
- Short teaching segments followed by immediate practice using the ongoing case study.
- Individual work followed by work in pairs, with peer review of the outputs.
- Guided group discussion: what works, what needs correcting and what remains a human decision.
- Preparation: Arrange access to a generative AI tool authorised by the organisation; no confidential documents will be uploaded. Provide the numbered fictitious regulation, a note template and a review checklist.
Observable criteria: Every substantive assertion refers to an identifiable passage. ; The obligations identified retain their conditions and exceptions. ; No deadline or reference absent from the case file is added. ; References that cannot be consulted are explicitly flagged. ; The checklist counts omissions, unsourced additions and misinterpretations before and after correction..
Frequently asked questions
Do you need prior knowledge of AI?
No. The first instruction is built step by step using the training case file.
Can you use an internal case file?
Exercises remain fictitious or anonymised and are carried out only in tools authorised by the organisation.
Does the summary constitute legal advice?
No. It must be validated by a qualified professional before use; no sensitive decisions are automated.
What should you do if an annex is missing?
Flag the limitation, request the document and do not infer its content.
