Legal vigilance habits

How can you spot a misleading legal response from AI before forwarding or using it?

1250 € per session, excl. VAT

In short

This half-day session of 3 hours introduces the limitations of an AI-generated legal response: fabricated references, incomplete context, uncertainty about the applicable law and confidentiality. Using a fictitious case file, participants compare a response against the available documents, document uncertainties and prepare a verification sheet for a qualified professional.

Why this training?

A fluent response can conceal a non-existent reference, an outdated rule or an interpretation disconnected from the contract. In legal matters, good writing alone is therefore not enough to establish the reliability of a conclusion. The risk also lies in the information shared: a contract may contain personal or confidential data. Learning to limit the data entered and flag uncertainties helps prepare for a more rigorous discussion with a qualified professional. Running case study: The fictitious organisation Ordelis Céramique receives a request to terminate a supply contract. An employee proposes an AI-generated response stating that a penalty is automatically payable. The case file contains an incomplete contract, fictitious correspondence and a deliberately questionable legal reference. Application at work: After the session, reuse the sheet for a non-sensitive question, with fictitious or anonymised data and an authorised tool. Have the legal department review the uncertainties before any actual use; no sensitive decision must be automated.

Objectives of this training

  • Identify insufficiently substantiated legal claims in a response
  • Distinguish between rephrasing documents and making a legal assessment
  • Compare a cited reference against an identifiable source
  • Identify information to remove before entering data into AI
  • Draft a sheet of uncertainties to submit to a qualified professional

Who is it for and what are the prerequisites?

Roles and tasks concerned

  • Administrative and operational staff dealing with straightforward contractual questions
  • Legal assistants and department heads new to generative AI

Prior skills

  • No prior AI knowledge required; guidance is provided for the first practical steps.
  • Ability to read a standard professional document; no legal expertise expected.

What you will work on

  1. Recognising apparent reliability

Objective: Distinguish between convincing text and a legally substantiated response. Probabilistic generation, plausible errors, fabricated references and the difference between a contract summary and legal advice.

  2. Defining the scope of the question and data

Objective: Identify what AI does not know and what must not be shared with it. Missing documents, dates, jurisdiction, confidentiality and data minimisation. The terms of use must be checked with your legal department.

  3. Checking references and conclusions

Objective: Verify rather than ask AI to confirm itself. Existence of a source, currency, scope of application and accuracy of the quotation; limitations of verification based solely on a second AI response.

  4. Documenting reservations and handing over

Objective: Present a cautious synthesis to a qualified professional. Traceability of checks, wording of reservations and separation between a working draft and a validated opinion.

What you take away

  • Annotated legal response: facts, assumptions and claims to verify
  • Table for checking references and their relevance
  • Verification sheet and questions for the legal department
  • List of precautions regarding data entered

Method and assessment

  • Short explanations followed by immediate practice using the running case study.
  • Individual work followed by work in pairs, with peer review of the outputs.
  • Guided group discussion: what works, what needs correcting and what remains a human decision.
  • Preparation: Arrange access to a generative AI tool authorised by the organisation; otherwise, use the responses prepared for the exercise. Prepare the fictitious case file, a response containing errors for teaching purposes and source extracts with their origin and access date.

Observable criteria: The unsubstantiated claims in the model answer are identified, with omissions counted. ; Each checked reference includes an origin, a date and a verification status. ; The sheet distinguishes between available facts, missing documents and unvalidated conclusions. ; Unnecessary or confidential data is excluded from the query tested. ; The final response explicitly provides for validation by a qualified professional..

Frequently asked questions

Can AI replace a legal consultation?

This training does not assign AI that role: any conclusion used must be validated by a qualified professional.

Can we work on a real contract?

The exercises use only fictitious or anonymised cases, without confidential information, in authorised tools.

Is an existing reference enough to validate the response?

No. Its currency, relevance and proposed interpretation still need to be checked.

How is quality measured?

By comparison with the model answer: errors detected, remaining omissions, traceability of sources and explicit identification of uncertainties.
