Assisted learning progression

How can you turn a learning need into a coherent lesson sequence with the help of generative AI?

In short

In a half-day session of 3 hours discover how to prompt generative AI to organise a lesson suited to beginners. Using a fictional case, you clarify the objectives, sequence the lesson stages, select activities and check the alignment between intended learning outcomes, available time and assessment.

Why this training?

An outline of concepts is not enough to organise learning. Without observable objectives, content accumulates and exercises come too late. An explicit lesson sequence helps determine what learners should actually be able to do by the end of the lesson. AI can quickly suggest a progression, but it may also underestimate the duration of an exercise or suggest an assessment unrelated to the objective. The session teaches you to formulate a precise request and then examine each proposal before adopting it. Running case study: The fictional association « Plume des Rives » is preparing a 90-minute lesson for six beginner volunteers responsible for organising digital documents. The lesson must teach them to name a file, choose its folder and retrieve a document. A fictional filing rule serves as the reference. Transfer to work: Reuse the template for a forthcoming lesson in your organisation: replace the audience and objectives, check the content with a designated subject specialist, then adjust the timings after delivering it for the first time. Only share authorised and anonymised information with the AI.

Objectives of this training

  • Describe the audience, their starting point and the lesson constraints.
  • Formulate three observable learning objectives.
  • Write an AI prompt specifying the context, duration and expected format.
  • Organise instructional input, exercises and checks into a timed progression.
  • Evaluate the lesson sequence using a checklist and correct the discrepancies identified.

Who is it for and what are the prerequisites?

Roles and tasks concerned

  • Occasional trainers preparing their first lessons.
  • Internal experts required to teach a procedure or practical skills.
  • Training officers wishing to explore AI assistance in structuring a lesson sequence.

Prior skills

  • No prior AI knowledge required.
  • Be able to describe simply the content you wish to teach.

What you will work on

  1. From needs to expected learning outcomes

Objective: Define what the lesson should enable learners to do. Difference between topic, content and objective; beginner audience; time constraints; introduction to the limitations of an AI response.

  2. First guided request to the AI

Objective: Obtain a usable proposal for the lesson progression. Structure of a prompt: audience, objectives, supplied reference, duration, constraints and expected table; distinction between a proposal and validated content.

  3. Link demonstration, practice and checking

Objective: Link each objective to an appropriate activity. Progression from simple to complex; worked example with commentary; independent exercise; time for instructions and correction; checking through a concrete task.

  4. Check and defend your choices

Objective: Assess the pedagogical coherence of the result. Checklist: coverage of objectives, accuracy, workload, duration and evidence of learning; human judgement of AI suggestions.

What you take away

  • Scoping sheet for the 90-minute lesson.
  • Reusable, annotated AI prompt.
  • Timed teaching plan table: objectives, content, activities and checks.
  • Completed quality checklist with priority corrections.

Method and assessment

  • Short instructional inputs followed by immediate practice using the running case study.
  • Individual work followed by pair work, with peer review of the outputs.
  • Guided group discussion: what works, what needs correcting and what remains a human decision.
  • Preparation: Arrange access to a generative AI assistant authorised by the organisation; the exercises use only fictional or anonymised data. Optionally, choose a lesson topic and describe your audience without names or confidential information; a fictional case file is provided.

Observable criteria: The three objectives describe a verifiable action by the learner. ; Each stage contributes to at least one stated objective. ; Each objective has a corresponding practice activity and check. ; The lesson timings total 90 minutes, including instructions and corrections. ; The content follows the supplied filing rule; unverified additions are removed or flagged..

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to have used AI before?

No. The first prompt is built step by step using the supplied case.

Are the lesson slides also produced?

No. The deliverable is the teaching sequence; it identifies the materials to be prepared.

Can you work on an internal procedure?

Only with an anonymised and authorised version; otherwise, the fictional case remains the reference.

Does AI validate the teaching quality?

No. It suggests options; participants check alignment and feasibility using the checklist.
